I have been researching different cultures and the vast range of crafting techniques they use to make everyday things. Macrame is one that particularly stood out to me as I think it gives a really nice effect. I used this to generate a swimming costume the picture above is my toile I am very pleased with how it has turned out and I can't wait to make the final piece!
I am so pleased with the final outcome of my corset! I explored lots of different ideas in order to gather inspiration for this particular piece. I looked at local graveyard and areas of neglect. From this I developed the idea of growth and decay. I loved the idea of expressing the exquisite beauty that comes from dying plants. I saw such beautiful colours and textures whilst exploring these areas. I tired to portray this in my corset by having multiple layers. I burnt the fabric and ripped it in order to add more texture, I then embroidered and laced ribbon onto the boning channels this was to show how all the plants and shrubs grow and combine together. Lastly I added pearls and lace to show the delicate beauty that nature creates. I found designing and creating my corset very enjoyable, I am also pleased I have broadened my knowledge of garment construction and can comfortably make bespoke corsetry.
I had such an amazing time helping back stage at Graduate Fashion Week. It was a pretty hectic day spent running around London trying to find nipple covers just an hour before the show to fastening suspenders clips to stockings minutes before the models where due on the catwalk and so much more! The third year girls (now graduated) created beautiful collections and the show was spectacular. Seeing the show first hand inspired me and made me even more determined to try my hardest to make sure my collection shows at graduate fashion week when my turn comes around!Final walk showing various pieces from the talented Contour Fashion graduates.I had a wonderful time visiting Paris and going to Interfiliere and Salon de la Lingerie show. I also did all the tourist visits and sight seeing. I took my sketchbook with me everywhere I went in order to gather as much inspiration as I could for my Parisian Chic project. The brief for this project was to design and make a bra, suspender belt and knickers that all worked well together. It had to be made in black with one accent colour. I based my garments on the red light district; I wanted to focus on the reality contrasted with how we as tourist perceive the red light district. At first glance I thought it was all glitz and glamour but I soon realized that wasn’t the case. I portrayed this through my garments by creating delicate lace pieces but combining them with elastic strapping to show that the women are almost trapped. I emphasized this idea with the strapping around the legs of the suspenders, as some of the women where dancing behind windows or metal bars. My garments where one of few selected to show at the end of year catwalk show. My garments have also been shown in another in house catwalk.
(Photography by Steve Williams for the Ely Standard.) I started out at The College of West Anglia and after creating what seemed like thousands of sketchbooks, inspiration boards and design ideas I completed my first collection of three garments inspired by Alice in Wonderland Syndrome and Surrealism. All my hard work paid of as I achieved the Designer Of The Year Award and Distinction*, Distinction, Distinction as my overall grades for the two years. This meant I secured a place on my dream course! My collection was in the local newspaper after my garments had been showcased on the end of year catwalk show! My garments where also showcased in another fashion show in which I modelled for a vintage boutique that where raising money for charity. I was more than happy to lend my garments out for a good cause! They also fitted in well with the surreal theme of the show.
